Pulling this one from a conversation with Kyle Buchanan, a certified nutritional practitioner and resident nutrition expert on Canada’s The Morning Show.

Kyle breaks down one of the simplest levers for a healthier gut: variety. A diverse microbiome, meaning lots of different types of bacteria, is linked to less inflammation, easier weight management, and better mental health, and the easiest way to build that diversity is by eating a wider range of plant foods. He points to a benchmark of around 30 different plant foods a week, and it’s less overwhelming than it sounds, switching up apple varieties, rotating which grocery store you shop at, actually using the herbs and spices sitting in the back of your cupboard, and getting more red foods like pomegranates and grapes into your diet, since those feed a specific, important strain of gut bacteria.
