Pulling this one from an earlier episode with Kris Robertson, Sport Scientist for the Toronto Argonauts and Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Raptors 905. Before that he played CFL football himself after being drafted by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and has also spent time with the Toronto Argonauts’ coaching staff during a Grey Cup winning season.

In this clip Kris gets into something that keeps showing up in the most successful people he’s worked with: self-awareness. He tells a pretty funny story about his own resting face, his words, and how realizing he came across as unapproachable pushed him to make more of an effort with people. He also brings up a naturally shy executive who deliberately brings energy into every interaction because he knows that’s what the moment calls for. The point underneath all of it is that the people who do well aren’t necessarily the most naturally gifted, they’re the ones who actually know their own tendencies and are willing to adjust depending on who’s in front of them, whether that’s a team, a boardroom, or their own kids on the sideline after a tough loss.
